GoldenEye: Source OST Review

For the longest time, I listened to the GoldenEye: Source Original Soundtrack on YouTube. I probably stumbled upon one of the tracks by accident. Anyway, I’ve never played the game, which is a multiplayer deathmatch mod for Half-Life 2. But the basic premise is a reimagining of the Nintendo 64 classic using Valve’s Source game engine.

Like the game itself, the soundtrack is also a reimagining. All the classic tracks from the game are here in one shape or form. In some cases, they sound just as good – if not better – than the original. There are also some new takes on everything from the original movie’s opening music (the hilarious “Golden Pie!”) to the music from the watch menu (a funky “Ghetto Remix”).

The soundtrack was engineered by Greg “Audix” Michaelec and Trent “Basstronix” Robertson. Every track is well-made, even if the lack of sophistication is obvious (we can’t expect studio-quality work here). But the beats are clean and simple, which complements the source material and maintains an electronic/techno flavor.

Have a taste:

The original GoldenEye is one of those games where the soundtrack is delightfully old school; we still enjoy it, even if it’s compressed and low tech compared to modern games. I seriously doubt that even the Wii remake will even come close to the original score or even this one.

While the Wiimake of GoldenEye (see what I did there?) seems to be more of a riff on the original than a straight remake, it still irks me. Frankly, I’m surprised that any modern Bond game isn’t just Daniel Craig running around in a polo shirt punching people. It’s obvious that the developers and Nintendo are just trying to cash in on GoldenEye 007’s fame. Otherwise, they could have called the new game something completely different.
Hats off to this soundtrack!

I can’t speak to the quality of GoldenEye: Source, but if it’s anything like the soundtrack, it’s more of a love letter to the classic game than any sort of recreation or remake.

The soundtrack can be downloaded here.
You get a ZIP file with album artwork and everything: the James Bond iPod motif is very clever. There are 31 tracks, with assorted incidental music (win, lose, achievements, etc.). A couple of tracks are repeats, like the Cradle level theme, but in different flavors. The rest are either inspired by music from the game (or Bond music in general), and a few are original (“The Spy Who Pwnd Me” and “Golden Pie!”).

All tracks are MP3s, a couple of MBs apiece at 192 kbps.

If you have Steam and play Source games online, GoldenEye: Source might be worth a look. It looks like the game is currently in the fourth iteration of the Beta, with some new music as well. Regardless, the soundtrack is definitely worth picking up. For one, it’s FREE. And, it’s really good. As someone who really only listens to rock alternative, the techno beats are a nice change of pace for when working on my computer.

Favorite Tracks:
  • Life of a Spy
  • Guns ‘n Gadgets
  • Silo (Basstronix mix)

  1. Good find. I've got a Wii, though it's doubtful I'll pick up the WiiMix of Goldeneye. Perfect Dark was such a HUGE let down for me... this aptly put, "love letter" though has instantly brought back a lot of dorm room memories.

    Cheers
